Installation and Desktop

Live Session is not fully localized

The Live Session of the new Ubuntu Desktop installer is not fully localized. Non-English installation is still possible, but internet access is required during installation to download language packs.

Screen reader support is present in the new desktop installer, but remains incomplete. Users who depend on accessible installation should validate the workflow in a test environment first.

OEM installs are not supported yet

The official release notes still list OEM installs as unsupported.

GTK 4 applications display incorrectly in virtual machines

GTK 4 applications and the desktop wallpaper may not display correctly in VirtualBox or VMware when 3D Acceleration is enabled. The temporary workaround is to disable 3D acceleration or wait for virtualization graphics stack updates.

TPM-backed Full Disk Encryption Limitations

TPM/FDE is more mature in 26.04, but several limitations remain:

Some potentially eligible systems may be detected as ineligible for TPM/FDE.
At boot, the PIN or passphrase prompt may use the default keyboard layout. The 26.04.1 images include snapd 2.76.3, which normally fixes this; update your system if you still hit it.
Starting with 26.04.1, the mandatory PIN can be disabled on hardware whose firmware cannot be verified automatically (this lowers tamper protection).
If you forget the PIN/passphrase and boot with the recovery key, you may not be able to remove or replace the PIN/passphrase afterward and may need to keep using the recovery key.
Disk re-encryption is not currently supported.
Some post-installation self-healing and repair options are still missing.
TPM/FDE uses a specific kernel snap, which may lack certain hardware modules, such as the vmd module commonly required by NVMe RAID setups.
NVIDIA drivers are the only out-of-tree kernel drivers supported with TPM/FDE. Other third-party DKMS drivers are not supported.

NVIDIA

NVIDIA desktops may corrupt or freeze after suspend/resume

On desktops where NVIDIA is the primary GPU, the default Wayland session may show visual corruption or freezes after suspend/resume. The default Ubuntu Desktop session is Wayland-only in 26.04; if you must use X.org, choose another desktop session that still provides X.org, or wait for driver/desktop-stack updates.

Fonts

Installing ubuntu-fonts-classic may result in a non-Ubuntu font being displayed. Workaround:


sudo apt install gnome-tweaks

Then set Interface Text to Ubuntu in Tweaks.

GNOME removed PreLogin and PostSession scripts as part of X11 cleanup. Enterprise environments that depend on these scripts can reimplement the behavior with pam_exec or systemd.

Server

Apache2 hardening affects `mod-php` JIT

The Apache2 systemd service now sets:


MemoryDenyWriteExecute=yes

This blocks simultaneously writable and executable memory mappings and can break the PHP JIT path when using libapache2-mod-php, with warnings such as:


Warning: preg_match(): Allocation of JIT memory failed, PCRE JIT will be disabled.

The recommended solution is to migrate from mod-php to php-fpm. If you must keep using mod-php, override the Apache2 service:


sudo systemctl edit apache2

Add:


[Service]
MemoryDenyWriteExecute=no

Then restart:


sudo systemctl restart apache2
