Ubuntu 26.10 Known Issues and Compatibility Changes

Checked: 2026-10-18. Use this page for upgrade screening; follow the official release notes  and linked bugs for current fixes. Users of 26.04 should consult that release’s issues.

Upgrades and Boot

  • TPM-backed FDE: in-place upgrades from 26.04 are unavailable at release. Do not bypass upgrader restrictions.
  • Dangling /lib32 symlink: upgrades may stop at base-files; the exact impact on 26.04 → 26.10 remains under investigation. Do not indiscriminately remove system paths.
  • Custom /boot layouts: the official security blog and release notes differ on when restrictions take effect. Perform read-only inspection before considering partition changes.
  • TPM/FDE boot configuration: snapd manages it. Conventional GRUB customizations and update-grub may prevent booting; ordinary GRUB instructions do not automatically apply.

SSH and Package Cleanup

26.10 splits GSSAPI/Kerberos support from OpenSSH. After switching packages, the old package may correctly remain in rc state. Before the fix, purging those old packages can delete configuration still used by their replacements and break remote access.

Do not bulk-purge all rc packages. Inspect packages individually and establish recovery access first. Track LP #2169738  for the fix.

Service Migration

  • OpenSSL 4 removes ENGINE support; migrate PKCS#11 configurations to providers.
  • systemd no longer uses systemd-sysv-generator to generate services from legacy /etc/init.d scripts. Provide native units for custom services.
  • MySQL moves from 8.4 LTS to 9.7 LTS; back up databases separately and test restoration first.
  • HAProxy removes some legacy directives, and duplicate names may become errors instead of warnings. Validate the actual configuration before upgrading.

Desktop and Hardware

Select NVIDIA drivers for the specific GPU; see the driver guide. Check official hardware issues and test a Live USB on Snapdragon, Intel AX211 and AMD dual-GPU devices. RISC-V desktop images currently omit App Center by default; do not assume all architectures include the same applications as amd64.
