Black Screen / Boot Hang
This article has been initially checked against the Ubuntu 26.04 LTS April 2026 release notes and still needs updates from final driver and hardware feedback.
Common Causes
- Incompatible GPU driver
- Incorrect kernel parameter configuration
- Display manager (GDM) crash
- Corrupted initramfs
- Disk partition or filesystem errors
When facing a black screen, the first step is to try the nomodeset parameter. This is the most universal emergency solution that bypasses most GPU driver compatibility issues, allowing you to enter the system first and then investigate the root cause.
Emergency Solution: nomodeset
When you cannot access the graphical interface, use nomodeset to skip GPU driver loading:
- Hold Shift (BIOS) or Esc (UEFI) during boot to enter the GRUB menu
- Select the Ubuntu entry and press e to edit
- Find the line starting with
linuxand addnomodesetafterquiet splash - Press Ctrl+X or F10 to boot
linux /boot/vmlinuz-... root=... quiet splash nomodesetAfter successfully entering the system, address the driver issue.
Enter Recovery Mode
- In the GRUB menu, select Advanced options for Ubuntu
- Select the kernel entry with (recovery mode)
- In the recovery menu, choose:
- network — Enable networking
- root — Enter root command line
- dpkg — Fix broken packages
- fsck — Check filesystem
Using a TTY Terminal
If stuck on the graphical interface but the system is still running, switch to a text terminal:
Ctrl + Alt + F2 (F2 through F6 all work)Log in and proceed with troubleshooting. To return to the graphical interface: Ctrl + Alt + F1
Troubleshooting GPU Drivers
NVIDIA GPU
# Check NVIDIA driver status
nvidia-smi
# If the driver has issues, remove the proprietary driver to fall back to the
# kernel's built-in nouveau driver (nouveau is a kernel driver — no separate
# X.org driver package is needed)
sudo apt purge 'nvidia-*'
sudo apt autoremove
sudo rebootAMD GPU
AMD uses the kernel-built-in amdgpu driver, which is generally stable. If there are issues:
sudo dmesg | grep -i amdgpu
# Try adding to GRUB: amdgpu.dc=0Intel Integrated Graphics
sudo dmesg | grep -i i915
# Try kernel parameter: i915.enable_psr=0Fixing the Display Manager
# Check GDM status
systemctl status gdm3
# Restart GDM
sudo systemctl restart gdm3
# If GDM is corrupted, reinstall it
sudo apt install --reinstall gdm3
# Or temporarily switch to LightDM
sudo apt install lightdm
sudo dpkg-reconfigure lightdmFixing initramfs
# Regenerate the initramfs (Ubuntu 26.04 uses Dracut by default)
sudo dracut -f --regenerate-all
# If your system still uses the legacy initramfs-tools, use instead:
# sudo update-initramfs -u -k all
# Update GRUB
sudo update-grubFixing the Filesystem
If you suspect disk issues:
# In recovery mode or from Live USB
sudo fsck -y /dev/sdXnRepairing from a Live USB
When the system is completely unbootable, boot from an Ubuntu Live USB:
# Mount the system partition
sudo mount /dev/sdX2 /mnt
sudo mount /dev/sdX1 /mnt/boot/efi # EFI partition
sudo mount --bind /dev /mnt/dev
sudo mount --bind /proc /mnt/proc
sudo mount --bind /sys /mnt/sys
# chroot into the installed system
sudo chroot /mnt
# Repair inside chroot
apt update
apt install --reinstall linux-generic
# Ubuntu 26.04 generates the initramfs with Dracut by default:
dracut -f --regenerate-all
# On legacy initramfs-tools systems use instead: update-initramfs -u -k all
update-grub
# Exit
exit
sudo umount -R /mnt
sudo rebootViewing Boot Logs
# View the last (failed) boot log
journalctl -b -1
# Show only errors
journalctl -b -1 -p err
# View graphics-related logs
journalctl -b -1 | grep -i "gdm\|gnome\|wayland\|xorg"FAQ
What to do if the screen is black after installing Ubuntu?
First, try adding the nomodeset parameter in the GRUB boot menu to enter the system (see the “Emergency Solution” section above for details). Once you’re in, install the appropriate proprietary driver for your GPU, then reboot to restore normal operation. If you cannot enter the system at all, you can boot from a Live USB to perform repairs.
How to add the nomodeset parameter?
Hold Shift (legacy BIOS) or Esc (UEFI) during boot to enter the GRUB menu, select the Ubuntu entry and press e to edit, add nomodeset after quiet splash, then press Ctrl+X to boot. This is only temporary — you will need to add it again after reboot. It is recommended to install the correct GPU driver as soon as possible after entering the system.
Is a black screen always a GPU driver issue?
Not necessarily. While an incompatible GPU driver is the most common cause, a black screen can also be caused by a display manager (GDM) crash, corrupted initramfs, or disk filesystem errors. It is recommended to check the error log from the last boot using journalctl -b -1 -p err to determine the specific cause.
