As Ubuntu versions evolve, some tutorials may no longer be applicable or may need updating. This page tracks the significant changes brought by Ubuntu 26.04 LTS and their impact on existing tutorials.

Major Changes

The Ubuntu Desktop Session Is Now Wayland-only

Ubuntu 26.04’s Ubuntu Desktop (GNOME) session is Wayland-only and no longer offers an X.org session option; other desktop sessions such as KDE, Xfce, MATE, and i3 can still choose X.org, and X11 apps run via XWayland. Under the default GNOME session, tutorials involving the following need to be updated:

• xrandr screen configuration commands (replacement: gnome-randr or GNOME Settings)
• xdotool, xclip, and other X11 tools (replacements: wl-clipboard, ydotool)
• ~/.xinitrc and ~/.xprofile configuration
• X11 window manager configurations

# Old method (X11)
xrandr --output HDMI-1 --mode 1920x1080
 
# New method (Wayland/GNOME)
# Use GNOME Settings > Displays to configure
# Or use gnome-randr (if available)

Default Application Changes

The following applications have been replaced, and related tutorials need updating:

Installer Update

Ubuntu 26.04 uses the new Flutter installer. Old Ubiquity installer screenshots and workflows are no longer applicable. Key changes:

• Completely new interface design and interaction flow
• Changed partition editor operation
• TPM full disk encryption option is a new feature
• The distinction between minimal and full installation has been adjusted

PulseAudio to PipeWire

Ubuntu has used PipeWire by default instead of PulseAudio since an earlier release (23.04), and 26.04 continues this default. Older tutorials involving the following need updating:

# Old method (PulseAudio)
pactl list sinks
pactl set-sink-volume @DEFAULT_SINK@ 80%
pavucontrol
 
# New method (PipeWire)
wpctl status
wpctl set-volume @DEFAULT_AUDIO_SINK@ 0.8
# pavucontrol still works (through PipeWire's PulseAudio compatibility layer)

Network Configuration Changes

• Netplan configuration syntax may have updates
• systemd-resolved behavior changes
• Configuration differences from NetworkManager version updates

Python Version

The default Python has been upgraded to 3.13. In older Python-related tutorials:

• Virtual environment creation commands may need updating
• Some Python packages may be incompatible with the new version
• python3-pip usage has changed
